I had a conversation with a co-worker in which she revealed to me she doesn't shower before coming to work.
I know other co-workers don't shower before leaving for work, either because they mentioned it or the fact they smell at 9 a.m., so it's a given soap and water had not touched their skin. But this particular person admitting she doesn't shower in the mornings was a surprise.
I would NEVER EVER wake up in the morning, brush my teeth, wash my face and then put on my clothes and leave for work. Just the thought of doing that gives me the shivers. When I told her that taking a shower at night does not mean you are clean, she looked at me with a baffled look on her face.
I explained, "Every night that you shower, I will assume you aren't using a fresh clean towel. Chances are you are using a towel that was used 2 maybe 3 days in a row. Therefore the bacteria on the towel you use to dry yourself is now all over your skin." She thought for a second and said "The towel isn't dirty, I use it to dry my clean body off" I said, "Well if we were to use your line of logic there would never be any reason for anyone to ever wash their towels." She looked confused.
"Not to mention you aren't putting on fresh clean pajamas, you aren't crawling into a bed made with fresh clean sheets and bedding. Therefore your body may be semi clean but you have immersed it in bacteria, germs, body fluids and dead skin cells." And beyond her not showering every morning she admitted she doesn't change her sheets at a minimum of once a week.
She was honest enough to tell me I had offended her. But that wasn't my intention. This conversation was one I have had many times in my life from friends, family and co-workers that in the process of an innocent conversation about life, they revealed they don't bathe as I do.
It got me thinking, is there something wrong with me that I believe in showering every morning and changing my sheets once sometimes twice a week?
